Oregon Cancer Ski Out Weekend: Great Charity & Reason to Drink Great Beer!

Beer Luvvas,

I think I've finally recovered from this weekend's Oregon Cancer Ski Out, to report on the event; and the great beer that we consumed this weekend.

Unfortunately, our team suffered an irrecoverable fall on Monday morning and we were out of the running for the podium well before noon, but that didn't hamper the weekend since the sun was shining -although it was quite cold and windy on Monday.

I had to leave before the final fund raising tally was announced at the end of the event - I'll update this post when OCSO posts the number on their site.

UPDATE: Over $28,000 raised for cancer research and support of cancer patients this year! A new record - even in this economy people find a way to support great causes!

An interesting note: our team was able to have lunch with former Olympic Silver Medal Winner Steve Mahre, and he had an interesting observation on this year's Olympic Ski Team's results. If you compare the total number of medals the US won this year in only the events that were run when he and his brother competed in '72, they only won 3 - less than the total the US won in '72. The other 5 medals won by the US Ski team this year were in multiple newer events (Super-G, combined). It brings up the point of how hard it is to compare athletes across eras. All I can say is that my handicap this year with Steve as the pace-setter was much higher than in previous years (25-35 v. single digits).

Onto the beer....

Had an interesting Oat based Pale taster at Big Horse Brewing, but I needed a little more hops to do battle with the heat of their organic chili, so I went with the Pale Rider IPA, after a Nightmare Stout as an appetizer.

The winner for me this weekend was Double Mountain's Empire Strikes Back - a NW over-hopped IPA recipe (aka quantities of hops), but using original English malts. Picked up multiple growlers of that over the weekend.

I was disappointed with Deschutes' Hercules IPA - same concept only German malts. Waaay to Martzen-y for me - especially after a quaff of Hop Henge #7!

We had another Double Mountain IRA v. Hopworks Rise Up Red taste off, but Freebird was not present to vote. I still have to go w/the additional hops of the IRA.

The big surprise was a changing of the beer guard at OCSO where we were treated to Widmer Drifter on tap in the hospitality room on Sunday night! Nice!

Needless to say, it was another great year - with even more great beer!

Prost to the Oregon Cancer Ski Out and Growlers to Go!

As of close of OCSO finals we were just over $28,000 with more coming in.
Thanks for your part! We did miss Freebird!
