Beer Luvvas,
In one of the most ironic stories I've read about macro-swill in awhile...
Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev plans to start making watered-down beer -- as in cutting down water usage in its production process to help make the company’s operations more eco-friendly.
But the ABInBev goal is admirable. Many people focus on the carbon impact of how we live today, but the second place problem - and gaining fast - is how we are noticing a trend down in available clean water as well. ABInBev plans to reduce world-wide water use by 30% by the end of 2012. Interestingly enough, according to the LA Times Money & Company Blog I'm referencing, if they are able to achieve this goal the total gallons of water required to produce a gallon of beer will drop to 3.5:1. In 2007, the ratio was 5.03:1.
Other targets include recycling and reusing 99% of the waste associated with brewing and packaging beers, up from 97.2% in 2007 and 98% in 2009, the company said. Its U.S. breweries cut the material sent to landfills by 22% in 2008 and recycled 99.4% of the beechwood chips, aluminum, glass and other materials used the next year, it said.
The Bud Light and Michelob maker also wants to cut carbon dioxide emissions and energy use by 10% for each hectoliter of production.
Prost to environmentally friendly AB-InBev! If you must brew macro-swill, do so with less impact!
