2009 Zoo Brew in Review

Beer Luvvas,

Yes, I can't really believe it myself. But Portland has yet another solid beer festival offering every year in the Oregon Zoo Brewers Festival!

The 2009 event raised funds for the Zoo's conservation education programs, and new 'tools' for their on site veterinary hospital.

ASG's winners:

Alameda Brewhouse El Torero Organic IPA - another typical NW IPA with strong floral and citrus notes, but pulling this strength out of 100% organic grain is an atypical result.

Lagunitas 2009 Correction Ale - if there's one thing that 2009 has a need for (and plenty of opportunities to succeed) it's a correction! Lagunitas' contribution to this effort is an excellent start to 'getting things back on track.' This (dry?) hopped ale was a perfect quaff for the setting sun on this unseasonably warm afternoon.

Redhook Brewery Slim Chance Light Ale - Yes, it's a light beer, er - ale. However, it definitely falls in second place behind Michelob Ultra Amber in the ongoing competition of "If I had to drink light beer for the rest of my life, which beer would it be?" I'm actually happy to see Redhook trying another style - even if it follows in the footsteps of it's growing macro nature.

Also appreciated:
Laurelwood Hop Monkey
Double Mountain Hop Lava
Fearless Scottish - although that last glass contributed mightily to my lack of production the next morning.

Prost to another great Portland Beer Festival! Prost to Zoo Brew!
