Beer Luvvas,
Happy Three Day Weekend! Woohoo!
Freebird and I are enjoying a relaxing weekend in Seattle with SQHub and our two pooches. We had our friends John and Michelle join us yesterday for a few brews and a rousing game of Settlers of Catan on the patio in the sun!
Given we ahd all these beer luvvas together, I decided it was an excellent opportunity to have a Doggie Claws Vertical including the 3 vintages I purchased @ the Hair of the Dog Dock Sale (06-08), and SQHub donated his 2004 Magnum (excellent)!
Here are our tasting notes:
2008 - No aroma, very malty and a little harsh...."Achk!" Mellows out as it comes up to room temp.
2007 - Sweet aroma, still pretty alcoholic....sweeter touch, a lot mellower than the '08....."Cider-y"....."Hmmmmm, I like the '08 better."
2006 - Musty smell, no alcohol fire, heavy and sweet...Smokey woodiness!
2004 - Foamed unexpectedly @ the end of the pour, much more carbonated than the other years. Robust aroma..verrrrrry smooth..There aren't enough 'o's in smoooooooooooth for this beer!....By far the best of the group! Glad we have a magnum of this vintage!
The takeaway - eveyone preferred the '04 over every other vintage. There was a HUGE break point between the '06 and '07. Therefore my recommendation is: age Hair of the Dog Doggie Claws at least 2 years....anything beyond that is better, but I'd understand if you couldn't resist the temptation!
Prost to Barleywine Flights over a Three Day Weekend!
