2nd Day of Testimony on Oregon Beer Tax Increase

Beer Luvvas,

No new news (that I can find yet) out of the state capitol about yesterday's testimony, or who's speaking today regarding the proposed 1,900% increase in Oregon's State Beer Tax.

Unfortunately, we're not the only NW state investigating an increase on this type of 'sin' tax. Idaho also has a pending resolution to increase their state beer and wine tax.

The measure would raise the wine tax to $1.56 a gallon from 45 cents, and the tax on beer to 52 cents a gallon from 15 cents. - From AP report.

From yesterday's Oregon Live article, "The privilege tax on beer tax is currently $2.60 a barrel, which contains 31 gallons. House Bill 2461 would increase the tax rate to $49.61 a barrel."

By my math, that would make our current tax/gal. @ $0.0838/gal; and the proposed tax @ $1.60/gal. Proposing that we triple the proposed tax in Idaho (10x their current level).

Now it's been awhile since I've had a beer in Idaho, but I don't remember $5 pints @ their current level. So there may be some voodoo math calculating the potential $5.50 pints with the new tax level. I'm not saying that I'm in favor, I would just like someone to really explain the impact.

I'll try to post more if I can find it throughout the day....otherwise, I'll see ya all @ the Science Pub @ the Mission Theater tonight!

Prost to no taxation without accurate representation!
