Beer Luvvas,
OK, disadvantage to the new job, and all the travelling it entails. I was out of town last week for the unavailing of The 2008 Abyss Stout from Deschutes, and I was afraid that I wouldn't get any bottles this year.
Alright, I should have known before I read Dr. Wort's review of this year's brew that one of my all time favorite beers was about to be released - my bad! But I was shocked to hear that The Portland Pub sold 100 cases in less than an hour!
Both Belmont Station & John's Market were sold out the first day!
I called all the West Side Grocery stores I thought might have received a shipment:
New Seasons: OUT
Wild Oats: OUT
Haggen Market: "I can hold one bottle!" (Hope!)
Zupan's Burnside: OUT
Zupan's Raleigh Hills: OUT
Then I just started to get silly....
Safeway: OUT
Albertsons: What's Abyss?
QFC: "No clue, our Deschutes shipment comes in tomorrow."
And then I got desperate....
Zupan's Belmont - the old neighborhood, across town, and closing in less than an hour....
"Yeah, we've got MULTIPLE CASES. We'll hold six for you." Sweeter words have never been said.
I convinced the male half of the couple Freebird and I are crashing with through the end of the year to jump into the car and join me on a cross-town-trek for beer. Maybe not the best beer, but an extremely rare, and valuable beer: 2008 Abyss!!!!
One hour later, we were back on the West Side with a full case of this year's brew. We popped one open, and all the effort - the lows, the despair, the dread - were all in the past, and I was swept away to the malty, chocolate, espresso heaven that is The Abyss!
Tune in later for a comparative pouring between one of the 2 remaining 2007 bottles smuggled to Phoenix last year, and one of my remaining 11 08s!
Prost to The Abyss!

Thank you!! I totally hadn't been paying attention to the fact that it was coming out. After 20 minutes of calling around I finally hit paydirt at in my last ditch attempt, Fred Meyer. I cleaned out the last 7 bottles they had. I was afraid I'd missed out this year!
Nice score! Keep your eyes open, last year more bottles trickled out over time. And I do know someone who snagged some bottles at a QFC, so they do turn up in unusual places occasionally.
I found one at Fred Meyer...by accident. I was looking for Pale Ales! - Gooney
I guess no one read my review... :-)
