Best Airports for a Layover Beer!

Beer Luvvas,

I'm sitting here @ Oakland (OAK) International Airport, enjoying a 20oz draft of Pyramid's Thunderhead IPA and it's dawned on me to list the top Beer related layover airports for the discerning traveling beer drinking public.

You have a choice of where to schedule your between flight time, and I hope this little list can help you pick your itineraries accordingly.

I'll start with OAK. I have yet to step foot in Terminal 1 (non-SWA flights), but T2 includes a Pyramid Pub which serves all available Pyramid drafts (including SnowCap during the upcoming winter months). Unfortunately, the food selection is poor, but the Thunderhead IPA is worthy enough for OAK to be on the list of acceptable beer layover spots.

Salt Lake City (SLC) International Airport is a recent add to the list since they recently added a Squatter's Pub in Terminal 1, Concourse C. It's 3-2 beer, but that just means no mid-flight hangover! Check out previous posts for more info on Squatter's Goodness!

The Seattle Tap Room in Concourse C (coincidence?) of Sea-Tac (SEA) International has a large selection of regional craft beers: Red Hook, Widmer, Pyramid, and more! Plus, the menu is full service, including Beer Brats! A favorite item for this blogger!

Denver International (DIA) Airport has a Boulder Beer Taphouse in the Jeppsen Terminal, which is a great place to stop for a pint or two of Hazed and Infused, or Mojo IPA. But for the "Napa of Beer," DIA is not meeting my expectations.

San Francisco (SFO) International breeches the upper tier of layover airport because they have multi-brewer representation: Anchor Brewing and Gordon Biersh. Two breweries to choose from makes this an opportunity for layover there, and back again!

As in most beer related topics, the premier airport for beer resides in Portland, Oregon. Portland International (PDX) has not one, not two, not three, but four different tap rooms to choose from!
  • Laurelwood Brewing
  • Rogue Ales Public House
  • Portland Brewing & Pizza (note that this may go by a different name now, but it's in the main concourse before security in the dining area)
  • Gustav's Pub & Grill

When in doubt, swing your transfer through PDX. Talk to your travel agent, it's worth an extra plane change en route!

Prost to airport pubs!

From the 'good news, bad news' category:

ALB (albany, NY) has a Saranac Pub. Saranac is good beer. But what nine-finger land are you visiting if you have a layover in ALB?!?
