Portland Beer Tour Part III: OBF 2008 Highlights

Beer Luvvas,

Sorry it's been a few days since my last post, and a few too many for updates from 2008 Oregon Brewer's Festival. However, I have a solution: CLICK ON SOME ADS! I'm not buying an iPhone until I can offset the cost with some income from this site. When Google sends me my first check for X>$100 (currently scheduled for sometime in 2010), I'll use that as a down payment for the real time blog facilitator: all beer reviews at the time of the quaff!

OK, rant over....on to the highlights. I'm going through the OBF Program (can't tell the players w/o a program) and I'll make notes that I remember from my 3 days of tasting alphabetical by brewer....

Amnesia Brewing Co. Copacetic IPA: This was one of 8 IPAs (and 5 Imperial IPAs) at the fest this year - a much better showing than last year's Belgian-fest (at least for me). However, this particular IPA wasn't all that memorable. That may have been from the 6 different malts used in this particular version (they have many). So go check 'em out in North Portland - their patio is pooch friendly!

Bell's Brewery Bell's Porter: This beer was one of the top of the fest for me. Yikes, another positive post on a Michigan Brewery!! Although this beer won a gold medal @ this year's World Beer Cup, and it was a very pleasant sipper @ OBF, it still pales in comparison to Right Brain's.

Bison Brewing Chocolate Stout: This is my gaff of the event! We had a short stint in the South tent (where Bison was pouring) on Thursday, and I didn't get around to Bison. We hit the North tent all day on Friday, and went back to the South tent on Saturday - when Bison was pouring an ORGANIC IPA!!! AAAARRRGGGG!!! Anyone get a taster of this one???

Boundary Bay Brewery Dry Hopped Crystal Pale Ale: I was hoping for more lingering hop notes from the dry hopping, but this was a very nice, crisp ale brewed specifically for the festival. Hope you got a taste last weekend.

BridgePort Brewing Co BridgePort Hop Czar: One of the Imperial IPAs at the fest, I got a preview of the Hop Czar at the VQ during dinner Thursday night. It went quite nicely with my seafood stew and bacon wrapped prawns (Phoenician getting his fish fill). Not XTREME, but we'll get to that later....

Cascade Brewing Co (Raccoon Lodge) Razberry Wheat: I got a taster of this for the wife, and quickly found out that it was a terrible mistake. I'm disappointed that one of the original organizers of this great event would allow his brewery to bring this soda-pop masquerading as a beer to OBF. I hope the Lodge has better beers to offer next year.

Collaborator Resurrection Rye: One of the winners of OBF! This rye was extremely well done. One of the great things that the Widmer Bros have brought to the beer scene, Collaborator is a partnership between the home brewing org - The Oregon Brew Crew - and Widmer. Excellent!

Deschutes 20th Anniversary Wit: Last one for this post....not a high note. Yes it's a wit. It's crisp, it's refreshing, it's boooooo-rrrrrrrrr--ing. Moving on.

Prost to 2008 Oregon Brewer's Festival! Prost to Collaborator, BridgePort & Bell's Brewery!!!
