Hops Supply/Demand Impcating Phoenix Beer/Prices

Beer luvvas,

So far it's not a Hoppy New Year. Just in the last 24hrs I've already seen some of the impact of the much discussed hops shortage that we are expecting in 2008.

I've located the first $7 draft beers in Phoenix @ Delux. This could be a Scottsdale factor, but I'm not ready to just write this off since they aren't even pints: 8oz pours of Linderman's Frambois and Peacheress Lambics; a 10oz pour of Chimay Cinq Cent Triple; and 10oz of Basteels Triple Karmeliet.

But the worst news of all can be found in Papago Brewer Ron's November 07 post:

So far we haven’t had to change the hops in our beers but we will soon. The cost of Columbus hops, which we use a lot of in our Hopfather Double IPA has gone from $7.50 a pound to $50.00 a pound now. When we are out of our current inventory I am going to be faced with three decisions, stop brewing it, raise the price a lot or change the recipe and still raise the price. I will probably opt for the last choice since I love the beer and will do everything I can to keep it as close to what it is now.

This sucks since Hopfather is one of their best brews.

Needless to say, 2008 could be a tough year for all us Beer Luvvas. Danm!

Prost to anyone who plants additional hops in 2008 so 2009 can be less expensive for us all!

What's bad is I have a friend who's been looking into growing hops for homebrewing. The information she's found so far says it's usually 3 growing seasons before a new plan will start producing a significant amount of flowers. :(
