Free Bird's parents and our nephew are in town for a few days, and Papa Bird is a beer luvva to be sure. However, Papa is diabetic - Type I, just woke up one day and no longer produced insulin, so he has to watch his carbs. Which means that although he's a big fan of (and still has the occasional) stout, porter, kolsh, IPA, amber, etc. and so forth he has to drink lite beers to keep the carb count down.
Having brews w/my father-in-law, I've sampled Coors Lite, Miller Lite, Labbatt's Lite - but no Bud Lite - more carbs than the others, and tastes worse. But when he comes to town, I make sure that we have Michelob Ultra AMBER in the fridge. Last year @ the Tempe Great AZ Beer Festival I had consumed enough other brews that I thought I should at least give it a shot. At that moment, I declared, "If I had to drink a lite beer for the rest of my life, it would be Michelob Ultra AMBER! Not regular Ultra, that tastes like shit. But the Ultra AMBER is quite good, for a lite beer."
Since that discovery, I've actually added MUA to the regular 100+ degree summer beer rotation. It's great for sipping, with a lime, while floating in the pool after the sun goes down while the temp is still tripple digits.
So, if the Diabetes Devil takes hold of your life, or you feel the need to lose a couple pounds, consider substituting MUA - instead of removing all brew from your diet - that's just crazy talk!
Prost to not having to drink Lite Beers! But also cheers to Michelob for providing Ultra AMBER, a tastey low carb hops and barley beverage!
