Good evening all beer luvvas!!
Well, it's been awhile since I've been skiing in Utah (over a year now), but a friend and co-worker just returned from Skiing Heaven USA and reminded me of one of the great places to get beer in this city - in spite of the absurd liquor laws championed by the LARGE RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY located in SLC and the great state of UT.
Drive 31 short miles NE from Salt Lake City to Park City - the biggest, little ski party town the the country - and stop into the Wasatch Brew Pub. These guys brew some GREAT 3/2 beers - yes, I said GREAT 3/2 beer. This is not an oxymoron. If you drink beer for only the alcohol content, comment on my Binge Drinking post and then pour another Double Gulp o' your Swill o' Choice.
Our favorite is the Polygamy Porter - Bring Some Home to the Wives! and Why Have Just One? have to be two of the greatest beer slogans of all time. My favorite beer to consume @ Wasatch is the Wasatch Stout - a little more distinctive in flavor than the porter. Two previous favorites - not currently on the online beer menu - The 2002 "Unofficial" Amber Ale was introduced as an alternative to "the King of swill beers" until a lawsuit was levied against Wasatch for infringing the rights Budswiller purchased to be the "Official" beer of the 2002 Olympics; and St. Provo Girl - of the same style as St. Pauly Girl (Paulander), and sporting a similarly clad spokesmodel hoisting 2 steins. When I spent 2 months in SLC skiing a few years ago, there was a billboard just off I-15 depicting St. Provo Girl w/the Tig, Tig Bittys and the phrase, "If this sign makes you say, 'Oh my heck!' This beer is not for you."
Greg Schirf - Wasatch Brewmaster - has poked @ the religo-political brew-ha-ha that is SLC, UT once again with his "Darwin Approved" Evolution Amber Ale (re-released version of 2002 "Unofficial" Amber) to ensure that his brews remain politically relevant, as well as tasty.
So I give you Wasatch Brewing: A prost to excellent 3/2 beer legally available on tap in Park City, and in every Grocery store in the state of UT (with the exception of the multitude of dry citys/townships - but none of them are close to the slopes); and the sense of humor that comes along w/each pint and bottle!!!
Cheers!!
